Join WFA at Live Earth Farm for an interactive field day!

You'll hear from an innovative farmer and leading agricultural experts who are making a real impact on our communities. The agenda includes:

8:00 am - 9:00 am

  • Registration Opens
  • (Optional) Nick Filannino and Jo Ann Baumgartner of WFA and Sam Earnshaw of Hedgerow Unlimited will lead a walk around the farm showing how to identify beneficial birds and native plants.

9:00 am - 12:30 pm

  • Tom Broz, owner of Live Earth Farm, will highlight aspects of his farm and discuss his farming philosophy.
  • Jo Ann Baumgartner will cover the pest control benefits of cavity nesting birds and how to attract them with nest boxes for increasing insect and rodent pest control.
  • Brian Fagundes of WFA will share how to support beneficial birds with native plants that they prefer.
  • Richard Smith, Monterey County Farm Advisor, will share how grass cover crops are protecting water quality.
  • Sam Earnshaw will discuss benefits, techniques and issues with installing farm conservation plantings.
  • Joji Muramoto, UCCE Organic Production Specialist, will speak about the projected climate change impacts on California organic farms, and how to prevent soilborne diseases in organic strawberries.
  • Sacha Lozano, RCD of Santa Cruz County, will discuss irrigation systems that reduce greenhouse gases and save water on the farm.

12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

  • Catered Lunch (provided as part of ticket purchase)
