Join Wild Farm Alliance, University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR), and Point Blue for a webinar to hear about the benefits of hedgerows for pest control, ecosystem health and water quality.

Speakers and topics include:

  • Wendell Gilgert, NRCS and Point Blue (Emeritus), will discuss riparian bird species and how to support them.
  • Hamutahl Cohen and Christian Cormeir, UC ANR, will share research focusing on birds and insects that use riparian habitat and adjacent hedgerow habitat in avocado and citrus orchards.
  • Jenni Phillips, Point Blue, will discuss steps for planting riparian and hedgerow habitat on farms, including plant selection.

Upon completing this webinar, participants will have learned:

  • How to use birds to measure the health of a riparian habitat;
  • How diverse age classes, composition and structure of vegetation are utilized by birds and an array of other wildlife species;
  • About scientific research process and methods for investigating wild habitat impacts on birds and insects;
  • How hedgerows and wild habitat impact birds and insects (beneficial and pest) in citrus and avocado orchards in Ventura County;
  • The considerations and logistical planning needed to design, implement, and maintain a hedgerow or riparian planting;
  • About the Students and Teachers Restoring A Watershed (STRAW) Program and other community-based restoration efforts and resources to support farmers and ranchers with hedgerow and riparian planting projects.
